Summer 2024: The Water Issue
Water. It is life and it is death. The search for extraterrestrial life involves searching for water, since the presence of water means life. Deprived of water, we humans will perish in only a matter of days. We are captivated by the magic of water, particularly flowing water - for it nourishes our minds, heals our spirits and even speaks in whispers to distant ancestral memories lying at the core of our being. For thousands of years, water has been held sacred, bringing life to crops and holding a mirror up to our image. But in these modern times, water is now abused beyond reckoning. It is squandered, polluted, irradiated, plasticized, redirected, dammed, fought over, weaponized and commoditized. But to harness the power of water, particularly in our cities, is to catch it in a million ways in, on and around buildings and then use it to support plants and animals. This will nurture our collective well-being and protect us from water flood prone fury. If we let it, the green infrastructure revolution will begin anew our relationship with water and nature, and if we let it, can sustain us through this era of climate change.
