Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC) announces Applying Biophilic Design, a masterclass at CitiesAlive 2026 led by Bill Browning, Founding Partner of Terrapin Bright Green.

Applying Biophilic Design is a workshop that explores the science of biophilia, introduces patterns of biophilic design, and includes an interactive exercise focused on developing design strategies that connect people more meaningfully to nature in the built environment.

Participants will gain an understanding of how people respond to natural environments on a physiological and psychological level and how biophilic design patterns can be applied to support outcomes such as well-being, focus, and stress reduction. The session will also introduce pattern language as a practical design tool and include a hands-on exercise applying biophilic principles to real-world design scenarios.

Browning founded Green Development Services at the Rocky Mountain Institute and later co-founded Terrapin Bright Green. His work spans projects in public, institutional, and private sectors, including early work with Buckminster Fuller and projects such as the Greening of the White House and the Sydney Olympic Village. He is also a co-author of several publications on biophilic design and sustainable development.

Other master classes at CitiesAlive 2026 include Designing Green Roofs for Biodiversity, Integrated Solar Green Roofs Workshop, Designing Green Walls, Designing Irrigation Systems, and Designing Blue-Green and Green Roofs for Maximum Stormwater.
