Ben Flanner, CEO of Brooklyn Grange to Speak at CitiesAlive 2022

Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC) is pleased to announce a new podcast episode featuring Ben Flanner, Co-Founder and CEO of Brooklyn Grange, who will be speaking at CitiesAlive 2022 and sharing his new rooftop farm and orchard project at the Javits Convention Center in NYC. This podcast, Sustainable Futures: Designing Green Communities and Buildings: A Living Architecture Monitor Podcast, features different experts working in the field of green infrastructure design and implementation. This episode, “Bringing Agriculture Home to the Roofs”, discusses the business of urban agriculture, how the Brooklyn Grange weathered the pandemic, and how a rooftop urban food revolution can help improve our communities and the people who live there.

Food security is one of the most pressing issues our communities face. Accessing fresh, healthy, affordable food can be a challenge for many families and food miles can be a tremendous contributor to net emissions. Ben Flanner is a leader when it comes to rooftop farming. Brooklyn Grange has designed and managed fivel successful rooftop farms across New York, including the Javits Center.

The Javits Center includes a working rooftop farm and orchids, which produces over 40,000 pounds of produce each year. This 200,000 square foot rooftop takes advantage of the large building, has an integrated water management system, amenity spaces, and produces a wide variety of fresh and local produce that it uses in its kitchens.

Mr. Flanner will be speaking about the project on October 17 at CitiesAlive on how the Javits Center implemented green infrastructure in an unconventional way, alongside Jacqueline Tran, Director of Energy & Sustainability at the Javits Center, and Dustin R. Partridge, Ph.D., Director of Conservation & Science.
