Bill Browning is one of the green building and sustainable design industry’s foremost thinkers and strategists, with decades of experience advancing high-performance environmental solutions across business, government, and civil society. His keynote, “Re-Wilding Our Buildings”, will explore how green roofs and vegetated building systems can move beyond stormwater management and aesthetics to become powerful tools for ecological restoration, biodiversity enhancement, and human engagement with nature in cities.

Browning’s presentation will highlight how intentional planting strategies and locally specific species selection can transform buildings into living ecosystems that support native biodiversity while reshaping how people experience the built environment. He will also explore global examples that demonstrate how green infrastructure can reframe buildings as dynamic ecological systems rather than static structures.

Over his career, Bill Browning has helped shape some of the most influential sustainable design initiatives in the world, including early work with Buckminster Fuller, leadership at the Rocky Mountain Institute, and consulting on projects such as the Greening of the White House, the National Aquarium, Disney Hong Kong, the Pentagon, and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Village. He is a founding member of the U.S. Green Building Council Board of Directors and co-founder of Terrapin Bright Green, where he continues to advise organizations on environmental strategy.

CitiesAlive 2026 will bring together leading researchers, designers, policymakers, and industry professionals from across North America to explore the future of green infrastructure and climate resilience.

The conference will take place from September 30 to October 3, 2026 at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge. CitiesAlive has secured a special conference rate for attendees wanting to stay at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge. Learn more here.
