Urban Farming Pioneer Ben Flanner to Present their Latest Rooftop Farm at CitiesAlive 2022
Green Roofs for Healthy Cities is pleased to announce that Ben Flanner, co-founder and CEO of Brooklyn Grange, will be speaking about the new food producing green roof at the Javits Center during CitiesAlive, in Philadelphia at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel from Sunday October 16th to 19th. Brooklyn Grange is one of the leading rooftop farming businesses located in New York City.
Ben Flanner is a leader when it comes to rooftop farming. His groundbreaking model adapted green roof technology to cultivate vegetables, which has led to several successful new rooftop farms across New York, providing cities with green jobs and a novel way to access fresh produce.
Mr. Flanner and Brooklyn Grange run the new farm on the Javits Center, a larger than life convention center in NYC. The Javits Center has a 200,000 square foot rooftop that includes a working farm and orchids which produces over 40,000 pounds of produce each year. This rooftop takes advantage of the large building, has an integrated water management system, amenity spaces, and produces a wide variety of fresh and local produce that it uses in its kitchens.
Mr. Flanner will be speaking about the project on October 17 at CitiesAlive on how the Javits Center implemented green infrastructure in an unconventional way, alongside Jacqueline Tran, Director of Energy & Sustainability at the Javits Center, and Dustin R. Partridge, Ph.D., Director of Conservation & Science.
