Green Roofs for Healthy Cities Launches New Editorial Board for Living Architecture Monitor
Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC) is pleased to announce the formation of a new Editorial Board for the Living Architecture Monitor (LAM) magazine, the organization’s online publication dedicated to bringing you the latest in research, case studies, new products and services in the green roof and wall industry. LAM readership has been growing steadily in North America and around the world reaching more than 22,000 unique readers per issue. The expert members of the Editorial Board will help to grow the LAM readership by contributing original articles, reviewing submissions, and promoting each issue.
The Living Architecture Monitor Expert Editorial Board Members
Bruce Dvorak, FASLA, PLA is a professor in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning at Texas A&M University. In 2021, Bruce established the Southern Plains Regional Academic Center of Excellence with Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. He has published extensively on green roofs and living walls. His edited book Ecoregional Green Roofs: Theory and Application in the Western USA and Canada received a 2021 ASLA Research Honor Award. Bruce writes the Plants column for Living Architecture Monitor and serves as Chair of the Research Committee for Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.
Dr. Karen Liu is the Green Roof Specialist with Next Level Stormwater Management. Karen is an experienced researcher and educator and conducted green roof research at both the National Research Council Canada and the British Columbia Institute of Technology. As a former global product manager with a major German green roof company, she has extensive practical experience with green roof products and installation across North America, Europe, and Asia. She is a member of the CSA A123 Technical Committee, a lay councillor for the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects, and a Board Director for the Green Roof Infrastructure Network BC.
Amanda Starner is a Senior Product Specialist at Carlisle Construction Materials and has spent the past seven years supporting specialty roofing systems, including vegetated and overburden roof assemblies. Her expertise spans green roof assemblies, paver and overburden systems, air and vapor barriers, and the integration of accessory components within complex commercial roofing designs. Amanda collaborates closely with design and construction professionals to evaluate system options, refine detailing, and resolve technical challenges to ensure high-performing assemblies. She brings a practical, systems-focused perspective that highlights green roofing’s role in stormwater management, healthier environments, and heat island mitigation.
Vicki Sando is an environmental educator, author, and sustainability consultant passionate about creating innovative, nature-based learning environments in urban schools. She founded the pioneering green roof at PS 41, The Greenwich Village School in New York City, where she integrated hands-on ecological learning with STEAM education. Vicki is the author of What Is a Green Roof?, a Kirkus Reviews top pick, and The Kingsland Wildflowers Green Roof Teacher’s Guide for pre-K through fifth grade. Her award-winning programs foster environmental literacy while promoting climate resilience and wellness.
Luigi Petito is an expert in European public affairs based in Brussels, Belgium, at the crossroads of the European Institutions. In 2019, he was invited to establish and lead the European Chapter of the World Green Infrastructure Network. Since then, he has followed European Union policy and regulatory developments related to urban green infrastructure and advocates for the systematic integration of green infrastructure in urban areas.
Elizabeth Hart Morris is the president of Green Up LLC. For nearly 20 years, she has been changing the “nature” of roofing through design support, installer training, standards development, and nonprofit work. Her specialty is consulting on highly complex roofing and overburden projects, including high-velocity hurricane zones, hybrid photovoltaic and vegetated roofs, and restoration plans for existing systems. Elizabeth is the co-founder of the Green Roof Think-tank (GRiT), serves on the Green Roofs for Healthy Cities Board of Directors, and is the Past President of the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants Portland chapter.
Stan Szwalek is a Design Principal at Hoerr Schaudt with more than 20 years of experience leading complex institutional and municipal landscapes across the United States. His portfolio spans campuses, civic realms, and mixed-use districts, with a particular emphasis on education environments and the public realm. He shapes design vision and strategy for sites that balance performance, identity, and long-term stewardship. From leading the landscape framework for green roofs like the Meadow at the Old Chicago Post Office and Skylawn at POST Houston to higher-education projects like the University of Chicago’s Woodlawn Commons, Stan is an expert at knitting site, season, and innovations in landscape architecture with the community each project serves.
Richard Hayden, GRP ASLA-Emeritus, Retired Garden Roof and Blue Roof Department Manager, currently Advisor to American Hydrotech, Inc. (A Sika Company) based in Chicago, Illinois.
Steven W. Peck spearheaded the first green roof demonstration project on Toronto City Hall more than 20 years ago and the mandatory green roof policy in Toronto a decade ago. This innovative policy has resulted in more than 10 million additional square feet of green roof space across the city. Due to Steven’s work, GRHC has helped to win green roof policy victories in San Francisco, Washington, DC; Portland, Oregon; and Denver, Colorado. Steven also founded Green Infrastructure Ontario coalition to bring together organizations that share an interest in the protection and development of green infrastructure in Ontario. In 2007 he co-founded the World Green Infrastructure Network, an international organization that promotes the use of green infrastructure around the world, where he currently volunteers as its president.
Rushil Malik is a graduate from the University of Western Ontario, receiving an Honours Bachelors of Arts. She’s the Marketing Manager at Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.
Dr. Olyssa Starry Dr. Starry directs the Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment Program at Bucknell University, where she explores how green infrastructure, especially ecoroofs, influences ecological, social, and health outcomes. Olyssa has also co-authored a green roof activity book for children (Growing Up in the City). She previously taught urban ecology at Portland State University and was an active member of the Greenroof Info Thinktank (GRiT). She currently chairs the Regional Centers of Excellence (RACE) committee for Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.
