To Coincide with COP15, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities Releases A New Course - Biodiverse Green Roof Maintenance: Maintaining and Maximizing Biodiversity Opportunities

COP15 in Montreal has made it clear that “cities are increasingly taking a leadership role when it comes to protecting biodiversity.”  Biodiversity is one of the many potential benefits of green roofs, but this takes specialized design, installation and maintenance knowledge.

With this in mind, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, the North American green roof and wall association  is pleased to announce the release of Biodiverse Green Roof Maintenance: Maintaining and Maximizing Biodiversity Opportunities.  The short course is now available on the Living Architecture Academy (LAA) online training platform. This course is also only $45 USD, as part of the Holiday Sale, where all courses and proceedings are 25% off, but only until January 15, 2023.

The holidays offer an exciting opportunity for you to obtain additional CEU’s (APLD, ASLA, GRP, AIA) as the year comes to an end. These courses are perfect for emerging professionals, as well as experts who want to keep up with the latest trends in the industry.

This new biodiversity course is by Cynthia Pohl, Founder at Living Lands Landscape and Design, Journeyman Landscape Gardener and a GRP. “Biodiversity is easily lost in a world with human influence. Excellence in design, installation and maintenance of green infrastructure projects is essential.” says Cynthia. The new course explores the necessity of developing a comprehensive and well considered maintenance strategy for green roofs when prioritizing biodiverse plant and animal community establishment. If you’re interested in COP15 and biodiversity, you can learn more about how biodiversity can be found in green roofs through this course and other related courses on biodiversity on the Living Architecture Academy, such as Introduction to Biodiversity and Ecodesign: Concepts and Best Practices for Living Architecture. The value of biodiversity has been recognized across the globe and green roofs, when designed, installed, and maintained for biodiversity, can make a contribution.

This course details the many design and planning aspects that should be considered to maximize biodiversity and green roof functionality to secure lasting spaces for plant and animal communities.

About Cynthia Pohl:

Cynthia attended Olds College from 1995 - 1999 to earn her title as Journeyman Landscape Gardener where she received the Top Apprentice Award for her trade. This training formalized Cynthia’s experience gained from a lifetime of passion for environmental balance. After school and working as an apprentice for several seasons, Cynthia embraced the challenge to follow her own instincts. She envisioned creating excellent-quality residential and commercial designs that would be environmentally ethical while providing nourishing organic habitat for indigenous flora and fauna at the same time. In 2000 Cynthia established Living Lands Landscape and Design. She trained herself and her staff (and even her clients in most cases) to look at each project through the uniquely broad lens of her vision. This perspective-shift has become the signature experience for anyone involved with Living Lands. Cynthia’s innovative work led her to be invited to design, install and maintain the first two biodiverse green roof projects in Central Alberta. One of which went on to receive a Cities Alive Award of Excellence for Innovative Green Roof Design: Extensive/Commercial in 2015. Green roofs have enabled Living Lands to take the work in preservation and enhancement of local biodiversity to new heights.
