“This green roof symposium is widely-applicable to designers, installers, researchers and policy makers at any level of green roof knowledge. The expert-packed event and green roof tours will demonstrate what design and maintenance strategies have led to the most long-term thriving and watertight green roofs,” said Elizabeth Morris, GRP, Board of Directors GRiT and GRHC.

Expert presenters will be focusing on designing the roof for maintenance, and discussing what is typically seen during maintenance on existing Portland green roofs of all ages and types. Speakers will also address issues around inequity in green infrastructure, how to survive the value engineering process.  There will be multiple short-videos on a variety of unique approaches to green roof design from local practitioners.

Expert speakers include:

  • Vivek Shandas, Professor of Climate Transformation and Director of the Sustaining Urban Places Research Lab (SUPR Lab) at Portland State University, will present on environmental justice and the opportunity for integrating social equity into ecological design, environmental conservation, and urban green efforts.

  • Jean von Bargen Root, Principal and Director of Sustainability, MWA Architects, Inc. How to assess when a green roof is beneficial to a project, communicate the benefits and drawbacks to the building owner, and help the green roof survive value engineering.

  • Jon Eisner, Project Architect, Carleton Hart Architecture. Design considerations for long-term, thriving green roofs including structural weight capacity, access for maintenance crews, drainage and waterproofing protection.

  • Tim Strand, Conventional Ecoroofs. The local approach to simple and effective EcoRoof design.

  • Kevin Bower, Columbia Green Technologies, Director of Sales West Coast. Explore the ROI that a green roof can bring to a project, and how to communicate that value to a Contractor, Architect or Building Owner.
