Kate Fox-Whyte, BLA OALA CSLA, ASLA
Principal, Fox Whyte Landscape Architecture & Design Inc.
This week's feature GRP is Kate Fox-Whyte of Fox Whyte Landscape Architecture & Design Inc. Kate is an accredited landscape architect with more than a decade of professional experience. She started her Toronto, Ontario company in 2005 and became a GRP in 2015.
Why did you decide to become a GRP?
We specialize in contemporary residential landscape architecture and frequently work with architects. We were finding that almost all of our projects would have a green roof component and the architects/ clients expect us to handle that scope. Even though I had quite a bit of experience designing green roofs throughout my career, for both public and residential projects, I felt being GRP certified would give me a better knowledge base if green roofs were going to be a standard part of our scope of work.
How has the GRP accreditation enhanced your career?
Having the licence gives us credibility with clients and other consultants.
What does your company have to say about having a GRP on staff?
Having a green roof professional in-house increases the scope available to us and our involvement in each project. It keeps us up to date with green roof materials and construction techniques.
How has the GRP process contributed to your work?
Going through the courses and the exams gives me increased knowledge and confidence working on green roof projects.
What is one of your recent projects?
Relmar House is a beautiful residential project completed in 2015 that features an intensive green roof on a garage that we designed and a sedum extensive green roof on the houses. The project was used as a case study in the City of Toronto Eco-Incentive program.
