Green Roofs for Healthy Cities is excited to present our new series on featuring our Green Roof Professionals! (GRP). This week we spoke with Nathan D. Griswold of Inhabitect, LLC.

Nathan has worked at the forefront of the green roof industry for more than a 17-years and has played critical roles in the design, development, sale, construction and successful establishment of nearly 1,000 green roofs across North America. His company, Inhabitect, LLC, is a full-service firm devoted to designing, building and growing all forms of living architecture from green roofs to ground-level landscaping. Nathan has been a GRP since the very first exam was hosted at the CitiesAlive Atlanta Conference in 2009. Here is what he had to say about the GRP accreditation.

Why did you decide to become a GRP?

I have been involved with green roofs for over 17-years and was one of the practitioners selected to create the very first additions of the GRP training materials. I worked with other early adopters to create a training program for GHRC that became what is known as today's GRP training and accreditation. I was one of the first to sit for GRP testing at the inaugural event in Atlanta, GA. I took this test because it was a natural progression of my career and I wanted to be sure that my nearly 10-years of experience, at that time, within the industry "pre-GRP" was not overlooked or discounted by customers shopping for ideal professionals to join there team, simply said it essential to operating my own business and connects me to the industry as a whole.

How has being a GRP enhanced your career?

This is a hard metric to estimate because there is not a mechanism that accurately weighs what this accreditation offers me and my company. With this said it most definitely ensures I am not overlooked when customers are looking for experts to work on these jobs.

What does your company have to say about having a GRP on staff?

GRP accreditation is an important tool to have for a company of this size, it shows industry connection and industry knowledge. It separates us from competitors that do not carry the same experience and qualifies us for projects that require a GRP during the bidding process.

What is one of your latest projects?

The Munson Medical Center’s newly constructed Cowell Family Cancer Center is home to three separate healing gardens that are accessible by patients, hospital staff, and visitors. Learn more
