New GRPs Announced From The 2022 PREP Fellowship Program

Green Roofs for Healthy Cities and the Green Infrastructure Foundation are excited to announce the 2022 PREP fellows who have successfully passed the GRP Exam and are now Accredited Professionals! They were officially announced at CitiesAlive Oct 18th and have gained an Accredited Professional Certificate.

The Green Roof Professional Training & Accreditation Program program was created in an effort to bridge the knowledge gap in industry training and best practice. Before this, no traditional discipline or training contained all of the competencies necessary for green roof success- from building science, horticulture, irrigation, waterproofing, plant physiology, structural engineering and beyond. Since then, over 750 individuals have successfully completed the GRP Accreditation Exam and earned the GRP designation. Each course is approved for 7.5 AIA, ASLA, and GRP Continuing Education Credits.

“As an incoming graduate student in Dr. Jennifer Bousselot’s lab, I knew none of the inner workings of a green roof,” said Armando Villa-Ignacio, a recent GRP graduate. “I understood what they were, but not the full scope. This would have been a problem, considering the main research our lab does is all about green roofs. I was given the opportunity to participate in Green Roofs for Healthy Cities’ Green Roof Professional accreditation program. We were given around 9-10 months to take the course and complete the exam. Everything was online, which made it possible for someone like me, who has a full-time job and is a full-time graduate student, to complete the course. The course really helped lay the foundation that I needed to start and run my research, as well as get a better understanding on the green roof system. The exam itself was intensive, but we received a lot of time for it, allowing me to complete the exam with my busy schedule. Becoming a GRP also allowed me to connect to so many industry professionals when I attended the Cities Alive conference in October 2022 in Philadelphia and gave me numerous resources to be a GRP. I’m excited to utilize the skills that I have learned in both my research, as well as professionally in the future.”
