In this episode, Sustainable Futures sits down with rooftop farmer and sustainable food systems advocate August Stubler, who oversees the operations of the Blackwood Educational Land Institute’s Skyfarm at POST Houston. August has a passion for connecting communities with sustainable, local food and uses the farm to further that passion by exploring what is possible on a 1 acre plot of rooftop in downtown Houston, Texas. Through the Skyfarm, they are pushing the boundaries of rooftop food production and exploring how to develop sustainable, resilient food systems for Southeastern Texas. August Stubler
Blackwood Educational Land Institute

August Stubler is the Lead Skyfarmer at the rooftop urban farm, the Blackwood Skyfarm at POST Houston. August was born and raised in Texas and attended college in Massachusetts and Arizona. They have a Bachelor's degree in Sustainable Community Development and a Master's degree in Sustainable Food Systems from Prescott College. As a young child, August attended nature camp at Blackwood's Landfarm and is also serving as their interim beekeeper. August has worked for Blackwood for two years and has been the Lead Skyfarmer for the last year. They are currently enrolled in Urban Harvest's Permaculture Certification program and expected to graduate in May 2025.

Green Roofs for Healthy Cities

Steven spearheaded the first green roof demonstration project on Toronto City Hall 20 years ago and the mandatory green roof policy in Toronto a decade ago.  This innovative policy has resulted in more than 6 million additional square feet of green space across the city. Due to Steven’s work, GRHC has helped to win green roof policy victories in San Francisco, Washington, DC; Portland, Oregon; and Denver, Colorado.  Steven also founded Green Infrastructure Ontario coalition to bring together organizations that share an interest in the protection and development of green infrastructure in Ontario. In 2007 he co-founded the World Green Infrastructure Network, an international organization that promotes the use of green infrastructure around the world.
