Spreading Sun While Raising Funds: Local Urban Farm Looks to Expand Operations

The Green Roof Urban Farm is looking to expand its operations and is asking for the community’s help — but that help won’t go unrewarded.

The Green Roof Urban Farm originated in the West Side home of Christina Sabo, who began the business after a tough bout of COVID-19 in 2022. It is in that home that she grows microgreens, the earliest sprouts of a vegetable plant’s development that packs a punch of health benefits.

In a July 2023 interview with First News, Sabo said she could see the business expanding, but in order to do so, would need space outside her home.

Sabo says her farm is setting some ambitious goals for 2024, including a new urban location and expensive equipment. The goals come with a price tag of $250,000, something the farm is asking for the community’s help in achieving.

In an effort to secure the necessary funds, the farm is hosting the Sunflower Challenge — a pledge to plant a sunflower in the local community for every dollar donated.
