CitiesAlive 2024: 20th Anniversary Conference Unveils Six Exclusive Masterclasses on Green Infrastructure

CitiesAlive 2024, the premier conference on green infrastructure, marks its 20th anniversary this year. Hosted at MaRS Discovery District (101 College Street) in Toronto from November 6-9, 2024, this milestone event will bring together industry leaders, experts, and practitioners to explore the latest innovations in sustainable urban design. This year’s conference features an exciting lineup of six new masterclasses, designed to provide attendees with the opportunity to earn continuing education credits and enhance their professional skill set. Taking place on Wednesday, November 6th, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, these in-depth sessions, each lasting 3-4 hours, will cover a range of critical topics in the field of green infrastructure.

Masterclasses Include:

1. Biophilic Design: Principles and Practices  

  • Instructor: Bill Browning, Hon AIA, LEED AP, Founder of Terrapin Bright Green  

  • Explore the science of biophilia, the patterns of biophilic design, and how to applying them in a variety of spaces and projects.

2. Climate Positive Design for Landscape and Public Realm Projects  

  • Pamela Conrad, PLA, ASLA, LEED AP, Founder and Executive Director of Climate Positive Design; Daeun Yoon, Sustainability Consultant; Charles Ormsby, Canadian Climate and Sustainability Services Leader, ARUP  

  • Use the Climate Positive Design Pathfinder tool to discover how design choices can drive meaningful change to remove more carbon from the atmosphere than they emit

3. Designing Green Roofs for Biodiversity: Theory and Practice  

  • Professor Bruce Dvorak, Landscape Architecture, Texas A&M University; Cynthia Pohl, GRP, Journeyman Landscape Gardener and native plant expert; Angie Durhman, GRP, Principal of AD Greenroof LLC  

  • Masterclass providing attendees with both the principles of biodiverse green roof design and maintenance, as well as examples and tools.

4. Green Roof Policy Principles, Methods, and Case Studies  

  • Shayna Stott, Senior Environmental Planner, City of Toronto; Jeff Joslin, former Director, Strategic Planning, City of San Francisco; Shino Tanakawa, Executive Director, New York City Soil and Water Conservation District; Peter Lowitt, Director, Devens Enterprise Commission  

  • Cover the theory and practices of policy implementation and learn about the many tools and strategies involved in successful planning and implementation.

5. How to Best Specify and Design Living Walls  

  • Instructor: Lily Turner, Director of Green Walls, Urbanstrong  

  • Learn the essentials of creating thriving green walls from plant selection to ensuring long-term sustainability and maintenance.

6. Crop Production for Green Roofs: How to Get the Most Out of Your Rooftop Farm  

  • Arlene Throness, Farm Manager, Toronto Metropolitan University; Ines Lacarne, Field Engagement Coordinator, Toronto Metropolitan University - Urban Farm  

  • Explore techniques for maximizing crop production on green roofs, with practical advice from experts in urban agriculture.
