Green Roofs for Healthy Cities (GRHC), the North American green roof and wall industry association, is pleased to announce that Washington DC is has once again taken the top spot for green roof installations in 2018 according to its 2018 Green Roof Industry Survey, with Chicago, Toronto, New York City, and Seattle following.
The North American green roof industry continued to be a driving force in sustainability and resilience planning, with an estimated 5-15% market growth trend since 2013. Washington DC continues to be a driving force in the North American green roof industry, with comprehensive and multi-faceted policy approaches that combine requirements, incentives, and innovative market solutions to tackle the municipalities’ ongoing stormwater management and sustainability concerns. Additional municipalities like San Francisco, Denver, Portland and New York City have all adopting strong green roof policies which will likely fuel continued market growth and opportunity in the coming years. The survey results also point out that there were several new municipalities reporting green roof construction in 2018, and continuing into 2019.

According to the 2018 survey, corporate members recorded 763 projects in 35 US states and three Canadian provinces, installing 3,112,818 square feet of green roofing. The Executive Summary is available now at greenroofs.org, and the full report will be available this winter.
Although the green roof market continues to grow, there is still an enormous potential for new green roofs to be installed on tens of billions of square feet across North America. Strong policy support in cities like Washington, D.C. and Toronto is driving market growth. Green Roofs for Healthy Cities encourages municipalities, regions, states, and provinces to adopt policies in support of green roofs and green walls in order to build healthier, more sustainable and resilient communities.
