Denver Citizen’s Group Gathers Over 7,000 Signatures to Win Approval of A Ballot Initiative That Would Require Green Roofs on All Buildings in Denver, Colorado

Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, the North American Green Roof and Wall Association is pleased to announce that the Denver Green Roof Initiative has successfully collected enough signatures to complete a ballot initiative that will put a requirement for green roofs on the ballot in upcoming local elections on November 7, 2017.

The proposed green roof requirement is based largely on the City of Toronto Green Roof By-law but would apply to both new and existing buildings with over 25,000 square feet of floor space.  For existing buildings without sufficient loading capacity for a green roof, they would be allowed to apply for an exemption or be able to implement a smaller green roof and/or some combination with solar panels.

“We gathered these signatures solely with volunteers throughout Denver where there is significant public support for implementing green roofs on buildings,” said Brandon Rietheimer, Founder of the Denver Green Roof Initiative. “More than 80 per cent of the people we talked to loved the idea and wondered why we weren’t already doing it,” he added.

“This is the first green roof policy initiative driven by citizen power and if successful on November 7th, it will be a real game changer for the green roof industry,” said Steven W. Peck, GRP, Founder and President, Green Roofs for Healthy Cities.  “We are planning to have a Green Roof Symposium on November 2, 2017 with designers, citizens, manufacturers and policy makers, in order to lend further support to this citizen lead effort and overcome any misinformation and misunderstanding about the costs and benefits of green roofs.”

San Francisco is the first local jurisdiction in the U.S. to formally require green roofs or solar panels on new buildings as of January 1, 2017.  Jeff Joslin, Director of Current Planning, San Francisco will be speaking about this policy at the 15th Annual CitiesAlive Green Roof and Wall Conference in Seattle from September 18-21, 2017.  (citiesalive.org)
